Apple, Organic, and City Farm Markets
One
of the best places to find fresh, wholesome food is at weekly farmers
markets. They often begin operation in early June with plenty of early
harvest fruits and veggies. By the end of the summer and into early
fall they are in full swing with many foods available from butternut
squash to apples and everything in between. A fresh farm market is sustainable
and by purchasing food there it supports local agriculture and business.
It would be tough to find genetically modified “Franken foods”
at these social events.
An organic farm market has some of the healthiest and safest food in any given area. The marketplace is more than just a place to get fresh veggies, it is a social event that is frequented by many people whether they are buying food or not. It is a great place to meet up with friends or enjoy a warm morning with the family. Many have live bands that play while the market is open, it is usually a temporary event set up at a local park or city square.
These events are limited to farmers either, many craftsmen and artist are also present selling their wares. Handmade clothing can be found, as well as many other crafts and artwork.
An apple farm market happens when all the apple orchards and apple farms are harvesting their apples. City farm apples are also available whether they are Macintosh, Granny Smith, Red Delicious or even cider apples you can be sure that they will be fresh and delicious. Apple trees are incredibly unique and interesting. Each seed from every apple produces an incredibly different tree that will produce apples that are nothing like the apple it came from. Their genetic variations are incredibly numerous.
Those apples with names like the Golden Delicious were from one original apple tree. Every apple tree that bears this fruit is a splicing or clone from that original tree. Cider apples are merely from wild apple trees that bear inconsistent fruit. It might be too bitter to eat alone, but when made into cider it creates a great taste and preserves the liquid. Early settlers relied on cider as it was easy to make and there were many wild apple trees courtesy of Johnny Appleseed. Freezing the cider then removing the frozen water creates apple jack, the easiest liquor to make. Wild apples are sometimes called country apples and can also be cooked into delicious desserts such as apple crisps.
Farm market news is often sent out to local areas in the mail and information is often published in local periodicals and weekly newspapers.
